Read this before you start using Social Media
Many
of the social media companies across the world hire individuals who are
Engineers that design their channel to keep a longer audience interaction.
In Gambling there are many
companies that first give the user the profit and then they make him the fish.
Initially, people invest $10
in the Gamble and then earns $50 within a short time.
This makes them addicted to playing and one day end up losing all.
In Gambling the one who earns
thinks of to earn more and the one who loses has a desire to recover the
invested sum.
This makes him addicted to the
play again and get caught in the same way as a fish in the river.
The
Engineers working with social media companies make their users as addicted as
possible to their platform.
So when the user has a lot of
engagement on their social media channel, they make use of it.
They collect all the information
of their users which include one or more of the following
- Name
- Work
- Hobbies
- Area of Interest
- Gender
- Age
- Health
- Insurance
- Family Info
- Mutual connections
- Schools or Colleges
More the number of users, the more they make money by selling all the information.
Have you experienced a phone
call carrying some information that best relates you.
This is because social media
channels know everything about you, where you are, what are you doing, etc.
This is my personal summary representing an example: -
I took my dad to hospital on
16th November 2019 at 2 am in the midnight as he had a breathing issue.
Later on after changing 2 to 4
hospitals according to my family budget we came to know we had to do CABG.
CABG
is an open heart surgery for treating heart failures and we completed it in
hospital and my dad got discharged.
Suddenly
I started noticing that I received text messages and Insurance Phone calls as
my Information was out to these companies.
It
is quite obvious that insurance and health check-up companies are likely to get
a customer like me if they call me at this right time.
Social
media gets paid for our every information we give them and they transfer this
to companies and get paid in both ways.
We are at the point now where there are such tools that are tearing apart the social thread on how society works or it used to be.
How Social Media attracts you?
These
companies offer something magic in exchange for your attention and time with
your personal data.
Then
they gather more information about you and package it up with another such one
community interests and sell them out.
For Example whenever we open any page after a long duration, they show us 98 Notifications, 10 watch TV, 28 messages in the inbox that makes us drive crazy for it.
We get relaxed and the chemical named dopamine gets released in the brain that serves a pleasure for the mind.
This
pleasure increases with time as addiction to social media are more and remains
constant until it explodes one day.
The social media tools themes and codes
are designed in such a way that they make people addicted to it.
The
user starts giving more and more attention to these attractive and responsive
tools that make users' moods.
This addiction gets increased
with time and your concentration gets reduced with it.
This is because the user gets
panic and worried about their social media account.
Users
upload a profile photo or any graphic design they create and now wait for the
likes and comments to appear on the feed.
These make the user nervous
about very short likes and comments on profile photos and get stressed out.
Especially
the young generation is getting more involved with social media for getting
more likes which have nothing to do with their career.
This makes them dull and short
in memory to concentrate on their studies and exams.
Like in Gambling games, if you pull the slot machine arm in the casino you will win, but have you ever thought why someone would pay you only for pulling the arm of slot machine.
In
this way everyone would have started playing casino in Goa or Vegas whichever
suitable.
This
addiction to particular behavior is the dopamine effect that makes the brain more
comfortable, relax, and stress-free.
Researcher Robert Sapolsky1 calls social media as magic when you look at the phone for an expected notification which is there or not there.
When
this habit of checking mobile device for no reason turns high, that's the
dopamine magic of maybe
or may not be.
The hike in dopamine with the effect is roughly the same amount as you get from cocaine less than extreme.
This
is what happens with students and teenagers that check out phones every now and
then without any reason.
I have been through this a lot and here is my personal experience with this again.
I
made a habit of uploading photos on social media as a profile picture and started
getting likes and comments.
I also made a study when
uploaded it on Saturday and Sundays the number of likes and comments was more.
So commenting replies to
everyone on weekends gave more likes and comments and made my mood a lot.
This
turned out to be my hobby to check out my phone every now and then & also I
got stressed when the number of likes and comments were not satisfying me.
This
also started making me jealous of other people's photos present on social media that got more likes than mine.
I
also started thinking in a negative way about my friends who didn't like my
photos as I was stupid enough not to understand the algorithm.
The limit crossed when my mobile
lost one night and I now started feeling depressed.
The 2 days after I lost my
mobile and my Blood pressure had alterations because of which doctor suggested
I should not think much about it.
Yet I purchased Lenovo vibe k 5
note devices on the 4th day as I recognized it had been my second heart.
This way I never recognized I
had made my mobile as my other important body part after heart.
This
is how it works, as we uploaded profile photos and they send notifications
about the number of people who liked the photo.
This feels so honorable and respective and we open the mobile devices to check out again and again.
Algorithms
decide how long to keep your profile picture in the people's news feed so that
people like your photo and you get notified every time.
Meanwhile, they suggest you watch the videos or you like something and get engaged with it for a couple of
hours.
So when you do not get likes more than expected you get sad and nervous and start comparing yourself with others.
Another example of this is
alcohol drinking releases a lot of dopamine and makes a good mood.
But it’s always recommended not
to drink as it is harmful to us.
Drinking
alcohol and smoking a cigarette has various age rules in different countries so
it is restricted
but this is not the case in social media addiction.
Social media are the most addictive things in the hands of students without any defense they know for it.
How to get prevented from Social Media?
To bring this down under control you have to do the checklist: -
- Do they provide you Knowledge?
- Do they teach how to do?
- Is it time-wasting?
- Does it have anything to do with your career?
- Do they teach what’s good or bad?
If the answers are yes you
should plan and decide the amount of time to be spent on social media.
If the answer is no then you must try doing the thing that will make your career rather than spending more time on social media.
They represent only the one part
of our lives and do not represent the truth of our life.
Social media designs our graphics and makes a collection of photos and events that include one or more of: -
- Drinking Champagne
- Orchestra and Band
- Hotel Dinner
- Amusement Parks
- Holiday
The topics you post on social media can be one
or more that you post and are not the real you.
The real you who have sleeping problems,
career problems, and any other health problem that you do not care about.
This turns up comparing other people's
fake parts of their lives and as a target to become like them which is not the
truth either.
Comparing yourself with others creates low
confidence and depression within you for the other fake things people do on
social media.
Few amazing facts in the past: -
Before android, the older short phones used
to cover the major part of mobile by numbers and special characters.
The intention was only for increasing
telecommunication among each other.
The horse and the cycle were the old way of
transportation until cars introduced.
You can’t stop comparison as you have no
answer to that but you have to change the goal or the object.
You only have to measure yourself by
yourself, and you will start enjoying this when you stop putting pressure on
yourself to be more like others.
So the Bottom line is: -
- Stop comparing with others and do not use it as a source of wasting time.
- Decide why you have to use social media?
- Act something real that represents you.
- Make use of social media to provide some information worth it.
- Social Media is not evil if it's taken a good way.
